Spiritual But Not Religious?
A surprising number of people would answer Yes to that question. Many of us no longer find meaning in religions that are based on creeds, dogma, doctrines, sin and salvation.
Yet most people still have a sense of something beyond themselves, something spiritual or eternal, something that speaks to a greater meaning or purpose in life. People are becoming aware that spirituality is a state of consciousness, not what one believes in.
You may have thought that you were alone in that awareness, but the good news is that you’re not! The Unity movement, and Unity of Tri-Valley Church, is a community of people such as yourself, who are interested in growing that spiritual awareness, raising that state of consciousness, and manifesting it in practical, positive ways in their lives.
Unity believes that there are many, varied ways to access God/Spirit/Source, just as there are many spokes of a wheel all leading toward the hub. Unity’s particular teaching is based on the “spoke” that is the educational and spiritual movement inaugurated by Jesus.
But Jesus’ teachings, not his sacrifice and death, are what we focus on. Hence, we think of Unity as positive Christianity! An example is a blessing we say to our children: “You are God’s perfect child. God and I love you just the way you are!”
How many of us were raised with that kind of positive, unconditionally loving and accepting philosophy? Not many. But now we choose to view ourselves, and all other people, as spiritual beings created in the image of God. And if the spirit of God lives within each person, then all people are inherently good.
From that perspective, we seek to help people grow, personally and spiritually, in practical ways. The emphasis is not on a future life but on enabling people to live fully in the present and to develop themselves in positive, joyful ways.
In summation, Unity emphasizes the divine potential within every child of God and teaches that, through a practical understanding and application of what Jesus taught, every person can realize and express their divine potential for a happier, fuller and more successful life.
Unity publishes the well-known periodical The Daily Word. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of the Unity movement, see www.unityonline.org/
